Money Stretch

Thursday, May 28th, 2009

Yesterday I spent about 2 hours with my girlfriend purchasing her new car (2010 Kia Soul 2u). She had her old car for 9 years and it was looking a little tired and beat up. It was also coming up on needing a few bucks thrown at it for maintenance.

A step into a new vehicle, no matter how inferior it would make me feel owning the older car again, was a wise option to consider. However while zoning in and out of paying attention to the salesman’s pitch I realized something. We work so hard to make our money but work even harder to let ourselves spend it.

My girlfriend could afford the car, my girlfriend liked the car, the car had everything she needed in a new vehicle. But she was still hesitant to buy it.

Most of us have this problem, no matter how much we need or want something we think that the money could be better spent on something else even though  we don’t  have anything else in mind. Keeping our money is better than spending it, rainy days are coming (what up recession).

Personally I a pretty terrible at spending my money, worse than my gf in fact. Big purchases and me don’t get a long, I start to get headaches and break out in cold sweats.

For example I himmed and hawed about purchasing my playstation3 for about a year before actually pulling the trigger and now I wish I had done it sooner. Sure money was ‘tight’ for a little bit but in the end I got through it and quickly got over the guilty pains I had the day of purchase.

I’m not saying we should all go blow our wads on piles of blow, luxury cars and high priced hookers ala Scott  Storch, but if we are just going to sit on our money for a rainy day why the hell do we work so hard?

How have we allowed tiny pieces of  paper to dictate our mood and decisions so much? Whoever figured out this whole monetary system screwed up. Everyone is either in debt or deathly afraid of it (I am the latter) and no matter which side of the fence we are on we all live in prisons constructed of dollar signs, decimal points,  and smelly paper with old people on it.

I am going to multi task and pay off my visa on work time everything should balance out that way.

Shout out to Lil Zanye for helping me pick the tittle for this.

Local GTA area parts theif
Joe Creti is a theif
“Here’s a pic of the suspected person. He’s also on a couple of other Toronto/Local car forums so just sending out the message.

Quick Summary:
- A local forum member’s lip was stolen in the afternoon in less than 10 minutes at Yorkdale Mall
- A white TSX was seen driving up to the car, the person got out and did what he did. Popped his trunk and took off
- Upon reviewing the surveillance footage, we found a TSX that matches a forum members with the same distinct features on the car
- The suspect says it’s not him, and goes on to say he’s not the person we have found him to be on the “other forum”
- A match in the photos, with the car, suspect and the username prove to be the same person, thus he is lying
- (on page 4) Noob creates another user account admitting to the theft and saying he is sorry the accused person had to be ridiculed by everyone

Here’s a picture of his car, incase you see it around”

BMX is a dangerous sport. We face the danger of getting injured every time we  push down one of our pedals. Without a doubt one of the most appealing things about the sport  is the thrill that comes with success with concurring fear, gravity, and common sense. Sometimes it seems as though defeating common sense is our top priority over anything else.

I feel that I can safely say every rider at some point in their ‘career’ has ridden without a helmet. If Darwin’s theory of evolution was 100% accurate BMXers  probably wouldn’t  even exist.

The conversation of helmets and BMX is a difficult one to have without coming of preachy or condescending but with the sport being pushed to insane new levels everyday and the devastating  injury that happened to Mike Aitken it is a conversation that needs to continue to be had until we as a community smarten up.

I’m no saint, I have done a lot of riding  without a helmet. Even after my helmet no doubt saved my life the first time I learned to  do an endo. Like most riders it took a serious injury for me to smarten up and wear a helmet every session and I am really lucky that incident didn’t take my life.

During my first trip to Woodward, after learning how to flip and doing quite a few successfully onto resi, I hit my head of the lip of the ramp flipping into the foam pit. I actually don’t really remember any of it, or most of that day from about 1pm-9pm when I ‘woke up’. When I was ‘out’ (think lights on nobody home) I didn’t  remember learning flips, that it was my girlfriends birthday on Monday, or really where we were.  Losing eight or so hours of memory was enough to make me realize that no matter how crappy life can get it’s  worth remembering for the good parts after that trip I never rode without a helmet again.

If I could do that much damage wearing a helmet imagine how much more damage I could have done, or perhaps have already done, the countless amount of times I hit my head without a helmet and ‘just got a little  concussion’.

No rider is going to force another to wear a helmet, it’s  just an unwritten rule. It’s a rule that now I don’t like but I understand, I have been there. I have a lot of good friends who ride without helmets and I really hope to never hear about one of them being seriously injured doing so.

However  all it  takes is landing a 180 a bit back tire  heavy, or a shoe lace getting  caught in a sprocket during a roll  back to instantly send a rider onto their back and cause their head to whiplash into the ground. Nine times out of ten your might be able to keep your head from making full contact, but that one time your head does hit could be the  end.

Sure a helmet might cause you to lose a little “street cred” but to me it’s a more than welcome safety buffer. A helmet can be the difference between a trip to the hospital or a trip back up those stairs to give that rail another shot.

Something to think about.

The old robot obsession is kicking in again. My problem now, since this comes out in September, is should I read the book first or wait for the movie? The last time I read the book first I didn’t like the movie.

Suggestions?

This is what bmx is about

Friday, May 22nd, 2009

This video, to me, is what BMX is about good friends getting together having a great time with some great riding. The vibe to this video is perfect. I hope to one day have a back yard as epic as that.
