10 Awesome Things

10. Outside is pretty neat
I spend a lot of time inside, working, living, wasting time etc so being outside for a weekend was a nice change of pace. Nature is pretty cool.
9. Chipmunks
I could watch Chipmunks all day, they make cool noises and contently run around like they had ADD. One stole a wasabi pea from the ground near out site ran off with it then came and put it back after no doubt realizing it was really hot.

8. Beaches
Beaches are good most of the time. Even though it was pretty cold to swim I was able to hang out on the sand and watch random stuff go down.
7. People are generally nicer
Most people are going to have a good time so you don’t get the 9-5 Monday to Friday I am an asshole look from people as you walk by. It’s a smile and a nod which is a good change. As soon as you go back to work it is mean mugging time though.
6. Fishing
I don’t fish but a lot of people were doing it. Don’t drop your tackle box when you flip your kayak though one guy spent hours looking for his, I doubt he ever found it.
5. Kayaking
Pretty cool and a good work out. Just keep me sort of close to the shore or I start talking about drowning, death, and sharks.

4. Quiet
Camping is nice and quiet which gives you a good chance to catchup on thoughts that the world drowns out when you are in it outside of camping, provided you have thoughts that is.
3. Meat
I like meat, camping involves lots of fire which you use to cook which means you grill meat. Meat is good, fatty, animal murder, but good.
2. No schedule
The only time you have to worry about is check out time on your last day, other than that you can do what you want. Feel like sleeping at 2pm in the afternoon? Go for it. Want to eat dinner at 9pm get er done. Not having to do things at a certain time rocks.
1. Fires
If you don’t like fire I question your humanity. I could poke fire for hours and be amused. You can also make s’mores on it and what not but I really just like gram crackers.

10 Not So Awesome Things
10. Fires that won’t start
We had this one night, the combination of crappy wet wood and no hatchet lead to a pretty lack luster fire. The fire the next night rocked though.
9. Bugs
Actually we got pretty lucky this weekend and did not need bug spray, but you know, it could have sucked.
8. Setting up your tent in the dark
I do not recommend this, it is pretty tough we did it though.
6. Peoples bad music
Turn Sean Kingston off.

5. Loud talkers
We had some loud talkers near our site and once we got to know them they were actually not bad people just really loud. They liked big fires though.
4. Cold water
I have only been swimming in a lake once when it was warm enough to be fun. Our climate sucks.
3. Walking to the washroom
We were too close to other camp sites for me to pee on a tree without people hearing which meant I had to walk to the comfort station when I wanted to pee. Better than an outhouse though.
2. Sleeping on the ground
Make sure your air mattress is big enough for 2 otherwise you have to sleep on the ground. My sleeping bag has a memory foam bottom and I was sleeping on top of an old sleeping bag but I still woke up each morning pretty sore. Stupid chivalry.
1. Smoke smell
It took 3 lather rinse repeats to get the smell out of my hair! Geeze.

10. NHL 93

Never mind the oddly blue ice this game was lots of fun, relatively quick game play for the time epic hits, injuries, and fighting. EA sports cut its teeth on this game and it’s the reason why they are still creating some of the best sports video game tittles today. I logged a lot of hours playing this game, mostly during hockey season.

8. Golden Axe
I never owned this game but my best friend at the time did and we played a lot of it, looking back on it the female playable character was quite scantily clad I wonder if thats why his older brother bought it. None the less it was an pretty awesome game for when it was released (89) and you got to kick little elves for power ups! Take that short stuff.

7. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Hyperstone Heist
After playing the damn near impossible to beat TMNT for the NES I was hesitant to play another Turtles out of fear that my dreams of being a radical fighting turtle would be crushed further. However this game was thankfully modeled more after TMNT arcade game and had none of the frustration of the NES game. The bright graphics and sound made it really stand out but the best part was that at one point you could ride a rocket powered surf board!

6. X-men 2: Clone wars
This game was pretty unique due to the fact that as soon as you turned it on and selected a character you were fighting, before the tittle screen, no waiting no listening to a story just fight! Again vivid graphics and fun side scrolling action came into play here and they game also had a pretty decent difficulty curve so there was no blowing through it incredibly fast.

5. Comix Zone
This game is awesome, and had an original (albeit it completely insane) story line with great game play, levels, animation and power ups. However this game was pretty difficult and you had two continues at most so that kept the frustration factor pretty high. One cool fact about this game though was that it came with a free CD which was my first CD I ever owned. I listened to this song a lot

4. Toy Story
This game was able to capture the imagination of the Toy Story movie and transfer it to 16 bit form for the Genesis. Having a fun lofty feel and genuinely nice looking 3d animation it was very hard to ever get frustrated at this game and with its inclusion of multiple different puzzles there was not much monotony. I actually still play the ROM of this game from time to time and will probably end up playing it soon after I finish this blog.

3. Aladdin
I originally had no interest in playing Aladdin as I don’t really remember if I have seen the movie all the way through but regardless of that fact or the fact that Arabian Nights is a song that can remain forever stuck in your head the game was a lot of fun. Similar to Toy Story it was a hard game to get mad at no matter how often you died. Don’t forget, hammer pants are AWESOME!

2. Sonic 2
Sonic games really need no explanation. This one game with my Sega so I played it a lot, I let my dad play once and he got killed so fast no one in my family could play a video game worth a damn even my brother, not sure why as they are all well educated and capable of walking and chewing bubble gum.

1. Streets of Rage 2
This is my favorite game of the Streets of Rage series however all of them are awesome. If game rating existed at the time this would have recived an M rating because you could stab, shoot, and club people with big aluminum pipes. In addition to all of that there was a copious amount of scantly clad women in the game who you got to beat the crap out of, it was an equal opportunity beat em up game.

The Vancouver transit system consists of only four factions The Blue and Translink bus systems, the Skytrain, and the Seabus. The fare is equal for all of these systems and you can transfer between them seamlessly. Additionally a fair shair of the buses in Vancouver and Whistler come equipped with bike racks which the GTA is super far behind implementing.

9. Crepe Shops
Over the course of a few hours encountered 5 different crepe shops. Crepes are fairly un-healthy and yet we didn’t notice to many people suffering from the bulging waist lines that come from over indulging in them.

8. Climate
Any one who lives in Toronto is painfully aware of the inconsistency that is Toronto weather. that argues that the weather in Toronto is extremely inconsistent. The past two days (April 27th and 26th 2009) are a great example, 24 degrees yesterday 12 today. Awesome.

7. Litter
I didn’t notice as much of a litter problem in Vancouver City as I did Toronto and Whistler had virtually no litter to speak of probably due to the fear of Bears invading.

Perhaps Toronto needs to implement a Bear influenced litter deterent program. People would be quick to not litter if doing so resulted in a vist from the bear cavalry.

6. BC Bud
BC Bud is basically a brand name. No one refers to Toronto Marijuana by name.

5. Australians
Australians love to migrate to the Vancouver, more specifically the ski resorts. Australian instantly make anyone more attractive.

4. Canucks > Leafs

The leafs have not made the playoffs since the lock out in 2005 the Canucks have made it twice in the same amount of time and our currently doing it with our old captain.

3. Mountains
Not only do mountains provide amazing views they are also great for winter sports. The hills of the GTA pale in comparison on both counts.

2. Atmosphere
The atmosphere in Vancouver/Whistler seemed much more positive and youthful than that of Toronto. Not to say that Toronto is old and negative they just felt different. Whistler itself was like a big giant action sports bubble filled with the aforementioned Australians.

1. 2010 Winter Olympics
Vancouver got the Olympic games we wish we had, sure Vancouver didn’t beat us directly but we pretty much gave up trying after not the 2008 games.

10. Original Optimus Prime Box Art

If I didn’t include the original box art image of Optimus Prime I would have had to turn in my membership card to Transformers anonymous. This shot is a classic, even though it doesn’t really bare a strong resemblence to the cartoon Prime we all grew up loving.

9. Marvel shotgunned prime

I actually drew a version of this Prime for an art project in junior high school,  the completed art and the comic have long since vanished but my love for it has not.

Am I the only one who finds the tag line a bit strange?
“Not your fathers Autobot”.
How many Transformers fans have kids who are old enough to understand whats going on when this comic came out (1993)?

8. Optimus Christ

This motivational poster is just a screen grab from an episode but the first time I saw it I immediately printed if off and stuck it to my cubicle wall since I thought it was so awesome, surprisingly no one has once said anything negative about it.

7. Optimus Prime BMX Number Plate

This is rad, my worlds have officially collided. This  bmx number plate with Optimus on it can be purchased here.

6. Optimus Rhyme

This one is one of the most obvious play on words for Optimus Prime spun into an a really creative piece of artwork. There is an acute attention to detail at work here. Check the play and pause buttons on the hands and the four finger rings. This exceptional piece was done by reyyyyy on deviant art.

5. 80s in the palm of his hand

I Can’t remember where I picked this one up but I have had it on my computer for years. Love the use of He-man, Lion-o, and Snake-Eyes.

4. Optimus and Snake-Eyes

Another cross contaminated piece of art. Snake-Eyes and Optimus could really mess some cobra/decepticon forces up. This one is done by jpart on deviant art.

3. DW Poster Prime

I am a big fan of DW’s treatment of all of the Transformers comics. The detail on this picture is great and it looks like Prime is about to kick ass and take names. My girlfriend actually started a painting of this image, but never finished. Anyone who is up to the task of doing a painted version of this for me, feel free.

2. Deep Prime

This piece of prime deep in concentration is done by a Myton Abellera he has a bunch of other cool artwork here including a picture of Megatron and Batman that’s extremely well done.

BONUS: Optimus By EpsenG

Another deviant, EpsenG, did this piece which he described as follows “Wanted to make a pic of the great leader in the style of the old 80s Transformers paintings.”

1. Obama Prime

This Obama parody done by Tim Doyle was the inspiration for this list. The original Obama change poster is going to go down in history as an iconic piece of artwork, and this parody is extremely well done. It was sold in limited amounts over on Nakatomi. Until I get my hands on one of the prints I have a black and white version of this up in my cubicle as well.

Jalopnik
The folks at the gawker media network really know how to wet my reading appetite.  I originally found this blog via a digg post linking to the “Down Alameda Street” category. Down the street alone could keep me amused for hours but this blog also has a lot of other interesting automotive related posts, news, reviews, concept cars, galleries, it’s got everything needed to speed through what could be an otherwise productive day. Good stuff.

Cardomain Blog
Cardomain got lucky, they sent a newsletter to my nearly 70% spam filled email account and I actually read it, not only did I read it I clicked through to their blog and kept reading. This is huge because I normally delete emails like that before I even read open them.

The cool thing about this blog is they often link to cardomain member pages so you can follow builds and learn how badass cars got to be so bad ass which is a great way to build inspiration for your own project car, whatever it may be.

Autoblog
This blog is simple straight forward industry news, it’s actually not the type of blog I check everyday, but if you are looking at buying a vehicle do a quick search and see what pops up.

Idiot Banter
I met Matt while working at officialCommunity, he was my senior and helped me advance my xhtml/css skills enough to advance into the position I am at today at torstardigital. He is also an awesome drummer, a snowboarder, and has come watch me ride at the bike show a few times. His blog, like mine, is based around his interests and since Matt is a perfectionist he really takes the time to write great posts.

Aside from the post shouting me out, I also really like his post on Why Vinyl?, An Event Apart and why Gene Simmons doesn’t know what he is talking about. Oh Matt also writes for the Much Music Blog as well big time!

ThirstyMates
I met Grant a bit after meeting Matt, same employer, except Grant was a junior, Matt was still a senior, and I was a no title along with my friend Nairica.

Grant likes a lot of things video games one, beer the other. He likes beer so much that he is brewing his own. His blog, thirsymates, contains original musings about one mans (well one man and occasionaly some friends) love affair with beer.

Taradoesrap
Tara is easily my most famous female friend, she is currently denying it via msn, but that does not make it any less true.

She has done interviews with: Royce da 5′9, Joe Budden, Big Daddy Kane(!!), and The cool kids. She has also been on Tyra Banks. Yep sounds famous to me. Taradoesrap is her blog, and this girl works hard, she also writes for hiphopcanada.com

Design

Smashing Magazine
This is standard stock for a design  blog, its popular, has great content and everyone  goes there.  I couldn’t call myself a web designer (actually I am a front end developer) without mentioning smashing. It’s a great resource for free stuff.

Toxel
Toxel is another blog I found via digg and have been hooked on ever since. It’s meant to inspire and help the overall design process but really I just go their to look at cool random things, like creative ice cube trays, creative paper cutting, and unusual ties. This blog is defiantly worth checking out if for nothing else other than toilets that make it look like you are ski jumping.

Inspiredology
Inspiredology is like a Canadian version of smashing. It’s actually done by a guy named Chad Muller who is one of the few classmates of mine who decided to stick with this industry. Like smashing their are resources to download, and tutorials. To set it apart from the crowd though Chad also does a lot of interviews with local designers, photographers, and bloggers and also runs contests. It just got redesigned so take a look.

I have not been in or around a lot of street racing but it only takes one time to ruin your life or the life of someone else. With this in mind I decided to compile a list of great you tube racer/ricer crashes.

Similar to my last list I left out the ones where someone could have died.

10. We will start this shebang off with a good old engine failure. No crash but the repair bill probably was not cheap.

9. Residential areas are perfect places to try out the motor swap you can’t handle! Thank god there were not any kids around that could have easily been killed.

8. This one is kind of hard to see but, a typical situation. Person A passes Person B then person B passes Person A, this goes back and forth until they actually race or this happens.

7. Mis shifted himself right into the ditch.

6. Flipping a car off a race track is normally a hard task. Unless you lack the common sense that tells you not to do a burn out on a slant. Dad’s pissed.

5. This type of thing happens often, since a lot of the spectators at street races are paying attention to a lot of things other than the race that’s going on. This guy probably got a call from his mom to come home and forgot where he was.

4. Oversteer can be a bitch when you are not ready for it. I feel bad for the people in the other lane.

3. Could it be that the above happened to two Mustang owners on the same day on the same corner?

2. This one is really, really old, but still to this day I am not really sure how he managed to ball up a burn out so bad that he had enough forward momentum to carry him uphill into the Jetta and do so much damage to it. That takes some sort of skill.

1. Number one is the longest one but by far the funniests. The way these two geniuses try and deal with the problem by staging an accident at the end is just too much.

I have a really unhealthy obsession with this blog almost as unhealthy as the food featured on it. Some of the recipes and pictures on this site are things that I would not mind trying a piece of, while others… well just check it out for yourself. Just maybe before lunch, as if you are going to be sick it’s better to do so on an empty stomach rather than a full one.

Failblog
This blog is amazing, it’s frequently updated with the most ridiculous feats of stupidity every found and collected on the internet. My only gripe is that although all the posts are really funny sometimes you have absolutely no idea what is being said or you wish you had a little bit more information about the video so you have an idea of what happened after.

Engrish Funny
Engrish is poor translations of the English language done by those who don’t fluently speak it. You see it a lot on dollar store merchandise and so forth. Some people also speak it but it’s not really as funny when spoken. This blog is a catalog of the best of written Engrish around the world.

Nerd Blogs

Bamkapow!
I found Bamkapow via digg at work one day and have been hooked ever since. It’s classified as a superhero blog, and the writing and commentary is great, however I feel what really  sets this blog apart  are the themed galleries like this Megan Fox gallery one for example.

Topless Robot
Despite it’s seemingly unsafe for work name, topless is actually very safe for work and really interesting if you are into “Nerd-news, humor, and Self Loathing”. Bam and Topless kind of overlap often in terms of content, but, where Bam has Galleries, Topless has amazing lists. The one about the 10 worst Transformers Rip offs is one of my favorites.

i09
i09 is my first entry from the gawker media network, but expect to seem them pop up in every post in this series. Gawker does a great job of keeping their blogs interesting to read even though others (see above) have access to  the same content.

Music

Nah Right
Nah Right is a hip hop news blog. Since I sit behind a glowing box writing xhtml/css drowning out my office psace depression with headphones I go through new music at an alarming rate. Lucky for me Nah Right pumps out links to new tracks faster than I can listen.

The Digital Undaground
The Digital Undaground is another hip hop blog but they don’t post as much news as they do new albums and songs. Whenever a new album comes out online I check here first. But a word of caution I got a virus from one of the links, so watch out and if you are at work make sure you have admin rights and know how to get rid of viruses.

Bossip
This blog is really just a gossip blog, however it seems to mainly focus on gossip from the music industry so I am going to put it here under music. Admitting I read about celeb gossip from time to time is pretty emasculating but I would rather read bossip then that other blog by that fat ugly dude.

What’s not to like about this show?

The only downfall was this show had parts filmed that took advantage of 3D glasses and I never had any around when it was on.

11. Wild C.A.T.S

Rock intros make any show good. Proof.

10. Mummies Alive

This show was pretty ridiculous…ly awesome! Brendan Fraser only started making money from Mummies after this show laid the ground work.

9. Big Guy and Rusty

I have a good feeling I was ‘too old’ to watch this show. But age is just a number, and robots are great.

8. Samurai Pizza Cats

This show was a big parody of itself other popular cartoons out at the time, which was pretty clever. If you listen close they make fun of the Ninja Turtles in the intro.

7. Street Sharks

With the success of the Ninja Turtles it was not uncommon for show creators to make all sorts of animals bi pedal and fight crime. In this case it was Sharks. But it has also been ducks quite a few times:

6. Gargoyles

This show was actually fairly original for the competition at the time. It got popular enough for a game to be released for Sega Genesis that was quite enjoyable.

5. Jayce and the Wheeled Warriors

I actually think I had more books on this show than anything, I should find those books. Anyway this show looks pretty awesome.

4. Biker Mice From Mars

Lyndsey hates when I bring up this show, but this is the only show on the list that was brought back for new audiences. The older show is far, far superior though.

3. Cadillacs and Dinosaurs

This show is essentially G.I. Joe and Transformers mixed together, sounds good to me. 80stees.com needs to restock this so I can buy it already.

I almost didn’t include this one since my gf remembers it so it can’t be that obscure, however after watching the intro I had a huge smile on my face so it made number one. It’s crime fighting time!

1. Remy Ma + Jail + Papoose = Jail Break Foolery.

This year Remy quickly followed in the footsteps of Little Kim, and Foxy Brown by getting sent up for 8 long years. Shortly after her sentencing she announced her relationship with fellow rapper Papoose. Then the whole mess ran afoul when Papoose tried to bust her out of jail and got caught. To make this all a little better (or worse) this was on their in jail wedding day. Cute.

It’s hard out here for a DMX fan these days, I am almost embarrassed to say I ever liked his music. I think he got arrested about 5 times this year. I hope he pulls himself together because until then he just keeps slippin, fallin, he can’t get up.

3. 50 Cent + Reality TV + Donald Trumps Prediction = Reality show fail foolery
Donald Trump had this to say about 50’s reality show:

“it will fail because he’s not Trump, but he’s actually a nice guy.”

50 said Donald is full of bad hair, I mean hot air, and went on with it anyway. But no one cared and the show got canceled. I watched 1.5 episodes and it was terrible.

4. Diddy + Blog + Orange Juice + Fruitloops = Diddy Crazy Foolery

Orange Juice in cereal? Custom Jeeps with under glow? I don’t even know, Puff has lost mind, but it’s funny to watch him just stare at the camera.

5. Lil Wayne + Tons of Drugs + Tour Bus+ DEA = Border Foolery.

Lil Wayne got snatched up by the DEA for having a mess of drugs on his tour bus. 105 grams of marijuana, 29 grams of cocaine, and 41 grams of ecstasy to be exact, oh and a pistol just for street cred. No doubt some lean was also present but they didn’t mention it since that’s always on him.

Rappers should just get their weed carriers a vehicle of their own and just have them follow behind the tour bus. It could be a Bosokou car or something.

6. T.I. + BET Awards Show + Snitching = Gun Charge Foolery

T.I. got arrested this year for trying to purchase nine or so Machine guns. I somewhat understand the need for rappers feeling that they have to carry weapons to protect themselves, but nine machine guns is a bit much.

7. Souja Boy + Ice T + Beef = 32 Year Age Difference Foolery

I am not sure who took the first blow (although I think it was Ice T) but either way an 18 year old and a 50 year old should not be fighting. Imagine walking up to a 50 year old and chirping at them? Or better yet one chirping at you?

I’m afraid to skate too fast past the old guys in hockey for fear they will crumble to dust, I shudder to think at making them mad.

8. Yung Berg + Transformers + Detroit = Chain Snatch Foolery

Yung Berg has had a transformers chain, which would have looked better on me, but he went to Detroit with it and it got ganked. From what I can tell Berg is about my size so what he was doing in a club in the D with that chain around his neck talking business is anyone’s guess, he got roughed up pretty good but is lucky he didn’t end up worse. Now Trick Trick and his entourage are taking the chain on tour. Hilarious.

I can’t believe this happened, the very large, very intimidating (well before this) Suge Knight got popped by a smaller man. The dude in the death row chair just got up and did the Ickey Shuffle.

10. Kanye + Vodocoder + Scruffy + Funny Clothes = 808s & Heartbreak Foolery

Some or lots of you won’t agree but meh, my blog, my opinion. Kanye cool for doing something new and creative, but I am not feeling it, and I have tried on several occasions. Watch your sodium up on that podium there fella.

A Globe

Globes are a fair size, and therefore come in a big box.  When a Kid sees a big box under the tree on  Christmas day their eyes light up. When they open the box to find an instrument used for learning their soul turns black.

Bootleg  toys

Nothing rockets your kid to the bottom of the cool totem pole faster than showing up with bootleg merchandise, kids know real from fake. Just like how everyone knows your ‘JV’ bag was purchased in China  Town.

Sweaters

Kids want toys dammit! Get them sweaters on your time, Christmas is their time. If you are going to get them a sweater at least have the decency to make it awesome.

Bicycle (if you live somewhere it snows)

I don’t know about you, but to  me getting your child something they can’t really use for 4 months is kind of a dick  move. Bikes make awesome presents, but not if its snowing outside.

Science  Set

Save the  money and  just  wrap  up  their  homework instead.

Does anything really have to  be  said about giving  socks to  a child for Christmas? Just throw them in the drawer  when  they are not looking  and go to  the dollar store  and  grab a handful of  sweet sweet toys. Just make sure your kid  does not  lick  them.

With Christmas  it is  really the thought that counts,  so  for your kids sake take a second to  think back  to your childhood,  and the gifts you  did not  enjoy and don’t make the  same  mistake. Nothing sucks more than  a  box of disappointment.

Or at least make sure for each box of disappointment there is at least 5 boxes of awesome under that tree.
